Plan Your 2013 Adventure!

Trooper Traverse Trip PlanningSpring is here so that means it’s time to start (or hopefully finish) planning your great Summer 2013 adventure! Depending on where you plan on exploring, you may need to apply for permits, as some permits are gone up to a year in advance. Then there is new gear to look in to, travel plans to make, and of course planning each day of your trip.

The REI Blog has a great little article on permits for various popular destinations around the country. Their content includes details on visiting places such as the Grand Canyon, Smokey Mountains, and many other national parks. Also keep in mind that many BLM areas require permits for extended stays in the backcountry.

What gear are you planning to get in 2013? Now is a good time to go through your equipment and determine what needs replaced or upgraded. The three year life of my Merrell boots was up last year, so I’ll be looking for a new pair this summer. I’m also thinking about a new Deuter pack :)

Once you have your gear and where you’re going, spend some quality time determining the best route and ‘must see’ places during your trip. You can visit our trip reports, or do a Google search for your destination to get great information on the area you’ll be exploring.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, make sure you work up a travel plan for your journey and leave it with at least three people. This is essential in ensuring quick rescue should something happen to you. I always carry my Spot messenger in the back country, and just learned about a great site that will notify your loved ones if you’re not back in time, it’s over at SendAnSOS.com.

Enjoy your 2013 and don’t forget to let us know about your trip via our Facebook Page!
