2019 Belize Part 3: Island Life

After spending plenty of time inland, the day came to venture east to the coast. Our route took us into the heart of Belize city, where we parked the rental in a safe (gated, fenced, and monitored) parking lot near the water taxi dock.

The trip was realativeky short and uneventful. When we arrived to Caye Caulker we loaded into a local cab (golf cart) and headed to our condo.

As you would expect, island life is much different than our time inland. The ocean to our east and plenty of local establishments that only exist to meet the needs of tourists. A quick trip to the local market, a great island dinner of chicken, fish, and rice, then it was time to turn in.

The beaches on Caye Caulker are not amazing. The eastern beach sits inside the barrier reef, so seaweed tends to wash ashore. Unfortunately the budget for cleaning these beaches is pretty much non-existent, so the fouls smell of deteriorating seaweed is common.

Luckily, a short boat ride to the north side of Caye Caulker brought us to a really great beach. Koko King is also setup to serve the needs of tourists. However this breach is carefully manicured and comes complete with chairs, tubes for floating, and a seaside bar.

We found our place in a covered lounge area and settled in for a beach day. The calm water and floating tubes created the perfect place to practice snorkeling. We even glimpsed a few baby barracuda, and a tiny jellyfish.

After a nice long day lounging at the beach, we took the quick boat ride back to Caye Caulker proper. We found a great local place, Maggie's, for an authentic dinner, then headed back for a rinse in the drag water pool. Another great day in Belize.
